End of Day Glass Basket

 For sale: A very pretty hand-blown glass basket. It stands 7 inches tall.

The condition is good with one tiny (barely visible) chip on the handle. It's so tiny I couldn't get a picture of it!

The colours are blues, yellows, greens, brown-burgundy and white.

We are not sure of the age but I bought it 30 years ago. It's been part of my end-of-day glass collection but I am downsizing. Time to sell some of them.

Hummel Figurine "Village Boy" by Goebel

This is a very nice collectible Hummel figurine made by Goebel in West Germany.

The name of this figure is "Village Boy" and he stands 6 1/4 inches tall. It is stamped Da 80 which means it was made in 1980. It is in perfect condition - no chips, no cracks and colors are bright.

Antique Silver-Plated Tea Pot by M.S. Benedict Mfg Co., New York

This lovely antique silver-plated tea pot is about 7 inches high and is very rare.

It is one of the first tea pots manufactured ca 1894 by the M.S. Benedict Manufacturing Company of Syracuse New York.

The bottom is stamped "M.S. Benedict Mfg. Co." "Quadruple SilverPlate" "795" and "Pat. Apr. 4-93" 

Scratched by hand under the 795 is "44" Was it teapot number 44? We don't know but there must be some reason for that scratched in number.

The teapot has an unusual "double" removable lid. When the lid is on the pot you can open the smaller top and there is a small opening, presumably to put your tea leaves in (no tea bags back then!). You can also remove the lid, almost certainly to pour the hot water in.

The M.S. Benedict Mfg. Co. became the Benedict Manufacturing Co. in 1902 so we can date this beautiful teapot between 1894 and 1902.

Victorian teapot, silver-plated by Toronto SP Co.

Lovely late Victorian teapot, silver-plated. Ornate pattern.

Bottom is stamped in a circle with a Crown and a Beaver: "Toronto SP Company" for The Toronto Silverplate Company which was founded in 1882. 

A second circle is stamped "Quadruple Silverplate"  and under that are the numbers 475 and then 7.

This antique teapot is about 7 inches high and has a hinged lid. It is in good condition with a small dent and an inch long scratch in one side.

The teapot would polish up very nicely or you can leave the patina of age on it

This appears to be a pharmacy or chemical company scale.

Hubby took the scale apart, gave it a thorough cleaning and replaced a few broken parts.

What a difference! It gleams and is in excellent condition. A very nice addition to our collection. 

Civil War Era Parlor Chairs

Two upholstered carved wooden parlor chairs from the Civil War era.

I'm guessing they are Walnut. The one on the left with arms is for a man.

The chair below has a wide seat and partial sides which are also quite wide. It is meant to hold hoop skirts of a woman.

Another scale we got at auction recently. I have not been able to find out much about it!

- marked on rear "Niet voor handelsooeleinden" I know that "niet voor" is Dutch for "Not for" and "handel" is Dutch for "trade" I haven't been able to determine the rest.
- measurements are 21 cm (8.3“) high, pan 11.5 x 10 cm (4.5“ by 3.9“)

- weight is 500 g

C. Wilson & Son Scale, Toronto Ontario

Yesterday hubs and I attended another antique auction - an indoor one this time (last week's was outside in frigid 50' weather)

We bid on and won quite a few scales. One was this C WILSON & SON scale from Toronto Ontario.

Found a reference in Sessional Papers Canada Parliament #15; Report of the Minister of Agriculture 1902

Excerpt on p. 186: C. Wilson & Son, 67 Esplanade St. East Toronto Ontario - Silver Medal Diploma

Excerpt on p. 200, reporting on the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900.

"C. Wilson & Son, of Toronto, were equally successful in obtaining a silver medal for their full collection of fine scales, from the smallest confectionery to the 1,000 lbs. platform scale. These scales, which indicate price and weights, were regarded with much interest by visitors who had no previous knowledge of the system".

Found in History of Toronto and Co. of York, Ontario:

"C. Wilson & Co. Toronto Scale Works, 45 Epslanade [City of Toronto] This is one of the oldest businesses of the kind in the Dominion, having been established in 1851. Employment is given to 25 men and 8 travellers. Mr. C. Wilson was born in Co. Armagh Ireland in 1818 and settled in Ottawa in 1840, obtaining a position in the department of the Surveyor-General. He came to Toronto in 1849"

Christie Antique Show

Well hubs and I finally made it to a Christie Antique Show in Dundas Ontario. We've been trying to go for years and this year we made it happen.

It was a long drive for us but well worth it. There were almost 300 dealers and booths there! Lots of big furniture items and a delivery service if needed. Lots of small items too, in fact it was a realy hodge-podge of treasures.

We arrived about 8:30 am (it opened at 8 am) and parking was very stream-lined and efficient. We were in and parked along with a huge line of cars, in less than 5 minutes. Kudos to the organizers!

Due to my physical limitations we only covered about 1/4 of the entire show, and that took us until 12:30 (4 hours). I simply couldn't do any more walking even with my cane. I told hubs to do a quick one hour scout of the rest of the area while I sat by the river at a picnic table but he didn't.

We were not disappointed although it was tough going at times because of the huge numbers of people all trying to get around the area and going in and out of the various areas. Some places were a tight squeeze and with that many potential customers, all wanting that great treasure at a great bargain price, it sometimes got a little "push and shove" which I didn't like.

But I found a nice ambrotype in an unusual shaped Union case to add to my collection so I was happy. I did see other items I liked but didn't buy. Maybe next year!

Even though it became more crowded as the morning wore on I think that next year I would go later in the day. I'm not sorry I went but it was an exhausting (and painful) day for me, so next year I have to figure out a better plan!

Oh and if you, like me, are trying to get your GPS to accept the address, put in Flamborough as the town, not Dundas... and it's held at the Christie Conservation Area so shouldn't be too hard to find.

I can't wait for next year's show!

Another Gurneys Antique Scale!

We bought this lovely antique scale recently at a large antique mall near Barrie Ontario. The decals and paint are original and in really good shape so we could not resist! Even the balance plate has original detailing and decals.

We have a fairly large collection of antique scales and it's hard to resist something different or in great condition. This is a Gurneys Scale which adds another one to our collection. Gurneys was based in Hamilton Ontario. In 1856 Elijah W. Ware had established a scale factory in Hamilton and the Gurneys were soon associated with him, forming Gurney, Ware and Company.

Antique Oak Victorian Library Table

Bought a gorgeous antique Victorian oak library table yesterday. With our new setup for high-speed internet (at last!!) we have computer equipment that has to go in our living room. Our living room is Victorian antique furniture and the equipment is front and center! It has been sitting on a rather ugly small table that was my mother's, and yesterday I decided it was time to go antique hunting.

I found what I wanted within 5 minutes of going into the Barrie Antiques Centre at 272 Innisfil Street in Barrie Ontario. We looked around, hubby found a military crockpot he's been wanting for some time (more on that in another post) and we found a second table that we loved!

It was a hard decision but Peter, the owner, was terrific about negotiations for a better price and the decision was made. We wished we could buy both (yes we are greedy antique hunters) but settled for the bigger more ornate one. The final price was fair and we were quite happy.

We visited Nina's on our way to Southworks Antiques. We loved it! It's a small shop, crammed full of goodies. You will need to allow a fair bit of time to really see everything that is in this antique store.

There's lots of china (not my thing but many collectors love china), small furniture, and so many miscellaneous items I don't think I could begin to list them. I wish I'd taken a photo of the interior - next time I will!

We bought a WW1 tumbler from England which will go nicely with hubby's extensive WW1 collection. We also spotted a silver-platted Victorian coffee pot/water jug with a nice porcelain interior, so we snapped that up. It was in very good condition and a reasonable price. Nina's assistant was willing to do beter on the price, so what more could we ask for? That makes our 13th Victorian coffee pot, so I think we can say we are collecting them....

Also saw a gorgeous antique bird cage which I desperately wanted but it was a bit pricey for my price range.

All in all I really enjoyed my visit to Nina's Antiques and will go back with more time planned to scrutinize all the goodies in there!

Green Spot Antiques

We were in Cambridge Ontario last weekend and dropped by an antique store we'd never been to before. Green Spot Antiques at 49 Cedar St.

It's a fairly large building with parking at the rear. I have to be honest though and say I wasn't that thrilled with it! For us it was a 10 minute walkaround and then out as there was not much of interest to us.

There were a few nice items and the prices were reasonable. It was mostly big furniture and architechtural pieces with a few miscellaneous items. We didn't see any china so if that's your thing you will be disappointed.

We did purchase a nice old picture frame in good condition so in fairness that's always a good thing and makes any visit to any antique store worthwhile. It is wortth a peek if you're in the area but I wouldn't personally bypass Southworks or Nina's (both nearby) for Green Spot if you are rushed for time

We did pop over to Southworks (which I love!) but we'd already done the whole store a few weeks earlier so we didn't stay long. No time to do Nina's but again we touched the surface of it last week. More on that in another post!

The letters written to Charles Eberly of Harrington Kansas from his Brothers, John of Carlisle PA & WH (?) of Steeltown PA and Friend John Clelan of Shermansdale, PA telling of family, happenings, friends in PA and ASKING ABOUT WORK OUT WEST. Apparently young fellows that are anxious to escape from farming, working in steel mill, brickyard, etc. with tales of unusual and/or humorous local happenings, information on relatives and friends. One envelope with these letters addressed to “Charles Eberly, Herington Kas.” Address was crossed off and replaced with “Box 2214 Hope” on front with a cancellation of “Herington Kas Aug 29”. Back of envelope had cancellation of “Hope Kan Aug 29”.

Antiques show reveals its million doller find

The first £1 million discovery unearthed on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow is to be revealed. They are keeping the identity of the record-breaking item a closely guarded secret until the show is broadcast. It was valued by art dealer Philip Mould, who is an authority on antique portrait paintings.

Folklife Museum “Toyland at the Museum” exhibit

The Folklife Museum in Farragut TN invites patrons to relive their childhood by visiting its “Toyland at the Museum” exhibit, on display through Jan. 16. They have toys from the middle 1800s all the up to 1950.

Flemington New Jersey 39th annual Antique Show

The 39th annual Antique Show at the Hunterdon Central High School Field house will be bigger and better this year. The show will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30. The Hunterdon Central Field house is at 84 Route 31, Flemington.

English Mahogany Barley Twist Chest of Drawers Cabinet

This cabinet is a most interesting piece. The intricate carving is impeccable but my favorite is the way that the barley twist is seperate and complete from the chest of drawers itself. All five drawers are dovetail constructed! Absolutely beautiful!!! It is made of solid mahogany and has a warm, hand rubbed fruitwood finish.

The carving on this piece was completely done by hand and must have required a master carpenter. The detail and skill it must have taken is truly incredible. The pictures do not do this piece justice. It is a rare find, so don't miss out!

Ellerslie Letter

This is a 4 page handwritten letter (no envelope) that is written by a mother to her daughter in July of 1848. It seems her mother has taken a trip to Ellerslie (at least that is what I think it says) and she describes the place and her incredible time spent there in great detail.


I’ve quoted some parts of the letter to give you a better idea…..

“July 24, 48

My Dear Child,

Here we are at last in one of the loveliest spots I ever beheld; nature has done great things for it and acts if she has not exhausted her resources as the novel writers say, has certainly used them to great advantages and I think were you to spend a week here you would be quite a convert to the idea of a country life. The ladies here seem to think that with a visit to some fashionable watering place in the summer and some weeks spent in the city during the winter, you might find it quite endurable especially with some chosen companion like (male or female) Camellia, to relieve the ______of family society. We are awakened by the sweetest songs of the feathered Hibe, how much more harmonious and soothing than that of bells, are regaled with cream by the gallon and fruit by the bushels. Flowers bloom around us in bewildering confusion. Fruit hanging in such clusters invite the hand to pluck it on all sides. The Delaware peruses its simplified courses between hills where height emulates the distant mountains and the evidence of whose sides is reflected with marvelous distinctness from it’s clear bosom. The village smiles at our feet and to ____all we can have a shower bath every afternoon…….When we meet we can compare notes and see whose place is the most beautiful, Mrs. Jacob’s or Dr. Paul’s. He and your father are gone today to the “Meadows” some twelve miles distance……We are called to pray at 7 in the morning at which all are punctual. Breakfast some after then the family disperses to their several employments then meet in the hall at eleven when Miss Lidney reads til one at which hour we dine after which each attends to her chambers to sleep or not as inclination dictates and then comes the bath then tea then a walk around on the river returning from which we all seat ourselves on one of the delightful piazzas until the evening……If a pair of Mary’s slippers can be found bring them with you. Also a white petticoat that was lying folded up in my room……..Yours truly affectionate mother.”

VERY NICE VICTORIAN ERA PERSONAL LEATHER CASED BAROMETER. IT HAS A NICE MINT DIAL. AND IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION EXCEPT FOR WORN GOLD PLATING ON THE RING AND SOME NORMAL USE LIGHT SCRATCHES ON THE BACK. THE DIAL IS 2 3/8" OR 6MM. IT IS 3 5/8" TALL AND ABOUT 1" THICK.
