Picked up this nice Victorian Figural Napkin Ring up at an antique auction last night for $120.00

It is Meridian Britannia Co. #199 and is a little boy in a skirt or kilt. He's holding a treat in his hand while his dog sits up and begs. It is valued at $350.00

Shakespearean Subject Pratt Pot Lid

Shottery,
the residence of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife.

This group of pot lids covers the various buildings associated with Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon.

These lids were produced by the Pratt Factory in the late 1850s and very early 1860s. 

This particular pot lid was given to my Aunt Lily by her mother, my grandmother and then to me. It would have belonged to my great-great grandmother in Ramsgate England.

It is still in its original round black frame.

These were lids from fish jars, and often saved by women as decorative art pieces. I own four that once belonged to my great grandmother and/or her mother. Another Aunt owns two more from the same household.

It has a leaf and scroll border (others with the same picture have a pearl dot border or gold lines) and was valued at $300.00-$500.00 in 2003

Antique Red Turkey Brand Coffee Tin

Red Turkey Brand Coffee Tin packed by J. B. Maltby, Corning New York

6" x 4 1/4" Worth $250.00 in 1996

Charles R. Maltby with his brothers Jerome and Erastus, was a wholesale grocer in Corning New York in the 1860s. They developed the Red Turkey brand of food products.

Between 1910 and the 1930s they sold their own brand of Red Turkey coffee.

Art Deco Armoire Wardrobe For Sale

This lovely 1920s or 1930s Art Deco wardrobe is for sale. It's in great condition, not perfect, but it only has a few minor dings and scratches. It's been treated gently in its 150+ years

Surface is veneer, in good shape. All original hardware. Appears to be the original finish interior and exterior. Made by Palatial Furniture Company and has the company logo.

You can get some idea of size of wardrobe as the man standing beside it is 6 feet 4 inches tall.

End of Day Glassware Pitcher

This is a very pretty example of End of Day Glassware.

At the end of the day, glass blowers would gather the molten leftovers of glass - the bits and pieces of coloured glass left from the day's work . With those pieces they would  create vases, pitchers and other objects.

Thus the term "End of Day" came into being.

The name is often misapplied to other glass items that are not true End of Day.

For example in the photo below, you see three vases.  The green and white one on the left is not End of Day.

The pink one on the right is also not End of Day. It was produced in a factory from a mold and was not hand done

The smaller pink and green vase in the middle is hand made and is in the style of End of Day but it was made with deliberation.

That is, with a deliberate choice of colours by the glassblower, not from the bits and pieces left on the floor or in the pots.

Snuff Box Engraved Thomas Watters, Miller

 This is a gorgeous round snuff box which is engraved with a man (a miller no doubt) with his tools. On the front is the name "Thomas Watters, Miller" and a heart with a bird and other objects. It's a tricky one to open as there is a secret method.

Antique Snuff Box from Scotland

 A Scottish Snuff Box in my collection. The silver band around the top is engraved with "John Mackay Spirit Merchant Edinburgh 1820"

There is a shield but I cannot make out the engravings, and under that it is engraved "obt 29th May 1847"

Lane Brothers Swift Mills Smokestack Coffee Grinder

 This is my latest coffee mill acquisition. I got it at an auction yesterday.

It is a Lane Brothers "Smokestack" Swift Coffee Mill No. 16. 

The Swift Mill Lane Brothers Poughkeepsie N. Y. is stamped on each wheel. The wheels measure 23" and the overall height of the coffee mill is 37"

There is no patent date but this intricate wheel design was not in use until 1878 when the company set up shop in Poughkeepsie. The Lane Brothers started in 1808 in Harts Village, Millbrook New York.

 Their first patent was registered in August 1845 when Beriah Swift built a factory to manufacture mills based on this patent. The Lane brothers, William And John, were cousins of Beriah Swift and they joined forces. The company was then called Swift and Lane Brothers. John Lane married Ann Swift the daughter of Beriah, further cementing the family business.

Some time between 1878 and 1882 the company moved to Poughkeepsie. Their coffee mills were in production up to 1920.

Hubs took it apart and cleaned it all up, then oiled it with Olive Oil. You  can't rub at the graphics or they disappear!

Next he managed to rotate the hopper so the graphics were properly lined up with a big one at the front and the back. They were off-center as you can see in this photo.

Both graphics are pastoral scenes. This picture is in better condition than the second one.

 

For now I've placed this coffee grinder (mill) with three of my other larger ones but it's only temporary while I think about where best to display it. These larger grinders are not normally here, they are scattered in various rooms in our house
