Lane Brothers Swift Mills Smokestack Coffee Grinder

Lane Brothers Swift Mills Smokestack Coffee Grinder #16

This is my latest coffee mill acquisition. I got it at an auction yesterday.

It is a Lane Brothers "Smokestack" Swift Coffee Mill No. 16.

The Swift Mill Lane Brothers Poughkeepsie N. Y. is stamped on each wheel. The wheels measure 23" and the overall height of the coffee mill is 37"

There is no patent date but this intricate wheel design was not in use until 1878 when the company set up shop in Poughkeepsie. The Lane Brothers started in 1808 in Harts Village, Millbrook New York.

Their first patent was registered in August 1845 when Beriah Swift built a factory to manufacture mills based on this patent. The Lane brothers, William And John, were cousins of Beriah Swift and they joined forces. The company was then called Swift and Lane Brothers. John Lane married Ann Swift the daughter of Beriah, further cementing the family business.

Some time between 1878 and 1882 the company moved to Poughkeepsie. Their coffee mills were in production up to 1920.

Lane Brothers Swift Mills Smokestack Coffee GrinderHubs took it apart and cleaned it all up, then oiled it with Olive Oil. You  can't rub at the graphics or they disappear!

Next he managed to rotate the hopper so the graphics were properly lined up with a big one at the front and the back. They were off-center as you can see in this photo.

Lane Brothers Swift Mills Smokestack Coffee GrinderBoth graphics are pastoral scenes. This picture is in better condition than the second one.

For now I've placed this coffee grinder (mill) with three of my other larger ones but it's only temporary while I think about where best to display it. These larger grinders are not normally here, they are scattered in various rooms in our house

Victorian Shaving Mug #4

Antique Hunter Blog - Victorian Shaving Mug #4
Private Collection
This is another Victorian Shaving Mug in our private collection. It's mostly pink and white and not as flowery as others.

Victorian Shaving Mug

Victorian Shaving Mug in pinks and greens. Shaving mugs  were used by men in Victorian times as part of their shaving ritual.

A shaving brush similar to the one in this photo was used to apply soapy lather to the face. There was usually a divider with one side having a narrow ledge with holes.

The soapy lather (a mixture of soap and water) would be brushed off where the holes were so that excess water would drain back into the mug.

Most shaving mugs are flowery and look more like they were meant for women but they were not.

Green Themed Christmas Tree Decorations

Decorating Christmas Trees With Vintage & Modern Ornaments
We decorate two trees every year at Christmas. One is a tall 9 foot tree, the second is smaller 5 foot tree.

I try to choose a different colour scheme each year or rotate through my various colours or themes.

Every ornament is in a labelled box or tub - "Winged creatures", "Purple", "Green", "Vintage", "Accent colours"   You get the idea.

Ribbons are in two tubs so I can choose which colour(s) I want to intertwine with the ornaments.

This was my green and gold themed tree

Antique Crayon Portrait: Woman in HIgh-Necked Calico Dress ca 1890s

Beautiful antique crayon portrait of a Woman with glasses and a calico high-necked dress.

Large framed ‘crayon portraits’ were made in the 1800s and early 1900s.
These were artistic photographs that resemble a cross between photographs and charcoal or crayon sketches.

They can be monochrome or  have charcoal coloring.  This portrait is beautifully coloured.

The photographer began the process with a light photograph and then embellished it with chalk and crayons.

Mostly you will find albumen crayon portraits from the late 1800s.

Excellent condition

Item #15 for sale: $50.00 + shipping (We need your zip or postal code to determine shipping costs)

A great way to have an instant ancestor or just a nice piece of art to hang on your wall.
